Sailing on the Solent

Lymington is a very popular tourist destination and welcomes a large number of visitors every single year, particularly in warmer months. The town is really well placed because of its closeness to the New Forest and the Solent. In fact the sailing industry is quite large in the town with three different marinas and a ferry service to the Isle of Wight.

The boating industry in the town comes to life in the summer. There are countless opportunities to go sailing or take a cruise. On top of this there are a number of boat races to take in. Lymington was formerly host to several famous regattas. The race track is very challenging because of the shallow depth and strong tides though and this led to a number of them moving further along the Solent where conditions are easier.

The town is home to two sailing clubs; the Royal Lymington Yacht Club and Lymington Town Sailing Club. The former has been active since the 20s and has over 3,000 members. The latter is slightly younger having been established in 1946. It is responsible for organising a sailing series in winter.

With the arrival of spring the number of people visiting the town to get out on the water will start to increase. This is a fantastic time of year because you can see the marinas come to life with activity after a quieter winter period.

If you are planning a visit you’ll want to choose the right accommodation so you can make your way to the town in a timely manner. This is particularly important in the busiest summer months when tourist numbers will be the highest and competition for boat hire and places on cruises rises. Staying close by is a very wise idea so you can get an early start each day.
